Carew Street School

Carew Street School

Built in 1894, it is no longer standing. It was closed in 1978 and demolished in 1999 after being neglected and abandoned by the city for over 20 years.

Sweet memories at Carew Street School 1969 to 1972

I went to Carew School from 1968 to 1971 4th grade, 5th grade, 6th grade and then went to Chestnut Street Junior High School from 1971 to 1974 for 7th, 8th, and 9th grades... then moved to sunny Florida! I am looking for my friends Luz Rubet and Ernie Bobola (my first crush!)... if anybody knows them, send me an email to paralegalgirl7@aol.com. I heard Chestnut St. Jr. High school burned down by arson... how awful. These two schools were historical buildings! I don't understand why they were not added to the Historical Society. We don't demolish our beautiful old buildings here in Florida... we actually save them from decay and make them into museums! I also heard Springfield got very bad with crime... what a shame! It was lovely when I lived there. I miss Springfield! I miss playing in the snow and sliding down on the snow behind Chestnut St Jr High school with my little brother! Its a place I will always have in my heart. If anybody has any yearbooks from Chestnut St Jr High for years 1971 to 1974, please let me know. I will buy them. Thanks and take care. Maritza Rojas

carew st school Springfield

I remember Carew St. School had a dentist chair. Kids who couldn't afford dental work or whatever were sent there for free dental care. I walked there with my mother in the early 60's from Lincoln School (Chestnut st in Brightwood). I can remember it was NOT a good experience. The kids were all trying to get out of going in there and the old nurse was not happy about all of us being scared. I guess it was not a long term thing, but there definately was a dentist in that school (early 60's). If anyone remembers, please comment.

Carew St. School in the '50's

I attended CSS up to 4th grade. I remember Mr. Donohue and a few of the teachers, Rita ? 2nd grade, Catherine Garvey 3rd grade and Ms. Kane, 4th grade . Times were different then, kids were different. I remember a few classmates though not many. Dodge ball at recess and Halloween contest.

1959 to 1966

I attended Carew St. School from 1959 to 1966, when Thomas Donahoe was the principal. I also remember my other teachers' names; along with the names of some of classmates. Contact me if you were at Carew during this time. Thanks, Fred.

Carew street school in the 50s

I attended Carew Street School as a child when I lived on 123 Bond Street which was across from the Bond Street Bakery. I attended During 1952 and 1954, where I started kindergarten and first grade. My name was Linda Simmons. Is there anybody who remember the Drs. Nelson who were the dentists there. Contact me if you have any rememberances of attending during that time. My email is: bbbcomedy@icloud.com.

Bond Bakery

Hello,
My mother worked at Bond Bakery in the 1950's and I'm trying to get more information about it. Was it called Bond or Bond Street Bakery? And was it located on Bond Street or Carew Street?

Thanks!

Definitely Carew St.

This is definitely the Carew St. school. I got the photo from an old book about Springfield, and I remember the school before it was torn down. Chestnut St. school is still standing, although unless something miraculous happens history shows it will likely be torn down in about 10 years.

After the new chestnut was built on Plainfield st. It stood empty for a couple of years and then it was burned down by arson. And is currently being hauled away in trucks. Demolition started a week ago when I wrote this comment. 5/ 7/2014
